Wannes Vanderhaeghen (°1982) graduated as a Master in Biology at Ghent University in 2005.
After obtaining a teacher’s degree in 2006, he shortly worked as a teacher of natural sciences, but in 2008 he started a PhD in Veterinary Science at Ghent University, completing his study of the prevalence and molecular epidemiology of methicillin-resistant staphylococci in animals in 2012.
Following a short period of postdoctoral research into the role of non-aureus staphylococci in dairy mastitis, he became involved in the Belgian efforts for reducing antimicrobial use and resistance in animals and humans in 2013, at VIVES University college and later the Veterinary Epidemiology Unit of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Ghent University.
In 2014 he joined the Belgian not-for-profit organisation AMCRA leading the Data Science and Analysis Unit. This team is in Belgium responsible for the analysis, benchmarking and reporting of animal antimicrobial use data, as a partner for both private and governmental data collection systems.
